Farmers across Santo are showing renewed interest in joining the National Cattle Restocking Program, as Phase 2 of the initiative gets underway this year.

While participation was low when the program first started, the Department of Livestock says many farmers from East Santo, South Santo, and Malo are now eager to take part, provided they meet the criteria set for the program.

This week, the department conducted a training and awareness session in Santo to educate new and interested farmers about the program. Team leader Mr. Tiel Joses said it is important that farmers fully understand the program before Phase 2 officially launches.

“We want to connect farmers who are part of the program and make sure everyone understands the national cattle restocking program. The first rollout was in 2015. This year, we aim to return cattle to farmers who are new recipients of the program,” Joses explained.

He added that any farmer who hasn’t yet heard about the program can visit the Department of Livestock office to learn more and apply.

“Farmers will understand how to work together with the government to increase cattle production and help achieve our national targets,” Joses said.

One of the new participants, Pastor Kalvao Love, who is also the new manager of Navota Farm, said this is his first time joining and learning about the program.

“Cattle productivity is not just about the size of land, but also requires a good stockyard, proper pastures, and other management practices. This is why Phase 2 of the restocking program is so important,” he said.

The National Cattle Restocking Program aims to strengthen Vanuatu’s cattle industry and support farmers in benefiting from national livestock initiatives. Farmers who wish to participate must meet criteria such as having good land, proper management of cattle, and other requirements outlined by the program.
