Only 19 Days Left for Efate and Santo Farmers to Apply for Agriculture Permit

New system aims to connect serious commercial farmers with government support before expanding to other islands.

There are only 19 days left for commercial farmers on Efate and Santo to apply for an agriculture permit.

Deputy Director of Agriculture, Mark Vurobaravu, says this new permit system is for serious farmers who want to grow their business and work closely with the government.

“This permit helps with the selling of farm products,” he said. “It’s a way for the Department to support your business and help take it to the next level. Farmers should make good use of the four weeks that are left. The forms are open now, and you can come to the Agriculture Department in Santo or Vila to apply.”

He said the ministry chose Efate and Santo first because they are the main markets, and the government wants to learn from the process before expanding to other islands.

After 11 August, the Agriculture team and an advisory committee (set up by law) will have 14 days to look at each application. If a farmer meets all the requirements, they will get a permit.

“If a farmer is still missing one or two requirements, Agriculture will still be here to help. We will register your readiness and keep working with you until you meet everything and can fully join the program and receive its benefits,” Mr Vurobaravu said.
