A water assessment is happening this week in Central Malekula to better understand the water people use for cooking, drinking, and washing.
Morgane Rosier, a researcher focused on water management, told VBTC News that the team is working closely with the Malampa Department of Water to carry out the assessment.
“Malekula is our small contribution to understand how water is shared from the main rivers in Norsup and Lakatoro. We’ve been speaking with water committee members, chiefs, and local mothers to learn about the water issues and any solutions already in place,” she said.
The assessment is part of a 4-year research project funded by the governments of Canada and Switzerland, focusing on water sources across Vanuatu.
Malampa WASH Supervisor, Haines Dini, said the aim is to gather important data to help plan for better water services on the island.
“We are collecting samples from rain and testing how much water comes down and flows in the area. We’re also installing equipment in high places to measure water levels,” said Mr. Dini.
He added that this work will continue for the next few years, and will also include future studies on underground water in Malekula.
