Boat Owners Call for Fairer Registration Fees

The high cost of boat registration fees is becoming a major issue, as boat owners begin to raise their concerns over the charges set by the Vanuatu Maritime Safety Authority (VMSA).

One boat owner and also the Chief of Araki Island, Havo Tamata, shared his thoughts with VBTC News, saying that the current boat registration fees demanded by VMSA are too expensive. He suggested that the fees should be categorized according to the different types of boats in use.

“It’s okay for those doing business—taxi boats or fishing—because they earn money and can charge fares or sell their catch. But if we categorize our differences, then it will be more reasonable,” said Chief Tamata.

He added that other boat owners from South Santo who do not operate commercial boats share the same concern.

“From the community that I come from, people are not happy. The government should reconsider how they treat people in the community because life is expensive, and not everyone can afford this. We need a fair solution.”

A boat owner from Big Bay also shared similar sentiments, saying:

“It’s hard for boat owners. In many cases, the price increases but the service doesn’t match the cost.”

VBTC News in Luganville is still waiting on an official response or clarification from VMSA regarding the rising registration fees and the concerns raised by the public.
