The Ministry of Health (MOH) is urging families not to miss regular injections for rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease (RHD), warning that the condition remains a serious concern among children and young people in Vanuatu.
The warning comes as Vanuatu joins the global community in marking World Heart Day today, the 29th of September, under the theme “Don’t Miss a Beat.”
RHD, can develop following untreated or inadequately treated infections such as sore throats and skin infections.
MOH says the disease is preventable through early treatment, while people already diagnosed with rheumatic fever or RHD need to receive their injections on time, every time, to help protect their hearts.
Head of Pediatrics at Vanuatu National Hospital (VNH), Dr. Orelly Thyna, says every missed injection or check-up is a missed opportunity to protect a person’s heart.
“Every missed injection, every missed check-up, is a missed chance to protect a heart. RHD is preventable, and together we can end it. Let us protect every heart in Vanuatu,” Dr. Thyna said.
MOH is encouraging the public to protect their heart health by eating healthy foods, staying physically active, avoiding smoking, and getting regular health checks.
People are also urged to know the warning signs of heart problems and seek medical attention promptly if they have concerns.
The Ministry of Health says the message for this year’s World Heart Day is simple:
Protect your heart. Get checked early. Don’t miss your injection. Don’t Miss a Beat.
