VMHS Warns of Drought in Northern Vanuatu

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Hydro-meteorological Services (VMHS) is advising communities that parts of northern Vanuatu are now experiencing the early stage of drought, following an extended period of below-average rainfall.

VMHS says this meteorological drought is the first stage of drought and serves as an early warning that, if dry conditions continue, there is an increased risk of water shortages and impacts on agriculture, particularly for communities that rely heavily on rainwater.

The department says that while occasional rainfall may still occur during the current El Niño period, it may not be enough to make up for the lack of rain experienced over recent months or bring an end to the drought conditions.

With El Niño expected to continue in the coming months, VMGD warns that below-normal rainfall is likely to affect other parts of Vanuatu.

VMHS Advises Public to Prepare

VMGD is urging communities, government agencies and stakeholders to:

  • Conserve water and use available water supplies wisely.
  • Monitor household rainwater storage and repair leaking tanks or gutters where possible.
  • Farmers should adopt water-saving practices and closely monitor crops and livestock.
  • Avoid unnecessary burning and take extra care with activities that could start bushfires.
  • Continue following the latest weather, climate and drought updates issued by VMGD.

VMHS says it will continue monitoring climate conditions and provide regular updates and advisories to help communities prepare for changing weather patterns.
