The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department (VMGD) has successfully launched the VMGD Weather App.
In a press statement, VMGD states that the new digital tool is designed to provide real-time weather updates and geo-hazard alerts to help communities across Vanuatu stay informed and prepared.
The launch event, held this afternoon at the VMGD Conference Room, was officiated by Honourable Minister of Climate Change and Adaptation (MoCCA), Ralph Regenvanu, alongside VMGD Director, Levu Antfalo, and key stakeholders in climate and disaster management.
Key Features of the VMGD Weather App:
- Real-Time Weather Updates – Accurate forecasts for all regions of Vanuatu.
- Geo-Hazard Alerts – Instant notifications on volcanic activity, earthquakes, tsunamis, and more.
- Marine & Climate Information – Updates on cyclones, El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), seasonal climate bulletins and Marine Conditions.
- Offline Access – Essential alerts remain available even without internet connectivity.
Strengthening Disaster Preparedness
With Vanuatu highly vulnerable to cyclones, rising sea levels, and seismic activity, the VMGD Weather App is a vital tool for early warnings and scientific data that protect lives, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
Hon. Ralph Regenvanu emphasized the app’s importance:
“The VMGD Weather App is an essential tool for every Ni-Vanuatu. Whether you are a farmer, fisher, student, or business owner, knowing what the weather holds helps you plan ahead and stay safe. This app ensures that crucial weather and hazard information is just a tap away, empowering our people to make informed decisions.”
VMGD Director Levu Antfalo added:
“At VMGD, our goal is to provide timely and accurate information. This app is a step forward in ensuring everyone—from urban centers to remote islands—can access weather forecasts and hazard alerts quickly and easily.”
