A Vanuatu Institute of Technology (VIT) student has returned home with an international bronze medal after representing Vanuatu at the 2nd Timor-Leste International Friendly Skills Competition 2026 in Dili.
Hospitality Food and Beverage student Severine Barako, from Ambae, secured third place in the Restaurant Services category, marking a significant achievement for both VIT and Vanuatu on the regional stage.
Speaking to VBTC News, Ms Barako said winning a medal during her first overseas trip was an unforgettable experience.
“I’m very happy with what I’ve achieved. Even though I came third, it’s something completely new for me. I’ve never achieved something like this before, and it was also my first time travelling overseas. To stand there representing the Vanuatu flag made me very proud.”
She said competitors were tested in a wide range of hospitality skills, including fruit carving, table setting, fine dining service, buffet service, cocktail preparation and coffee making.
Despite the pressure, Ms Barako said she remained focused on her own performance throughout the competition.
“Sometimes I wanted to look at what the other competitors were doing, especially if I made a mistake, but I reminded myself to focus on my own work. That helped me finish every task.”
She said one of the biggest challenges was adapting to unexpected changes during the competition, including different ingredients, processes and last-minute adjustments.
However, she believes those experiences have made her a better hospitality professional.
“I learned the importance of staying focused, being organised and managing my time. I also gained valuable experience from other competitors, and now I can come back and help coach future competitors so they are better prepared for international competitions.”
Ms Barako encouraged young Ni-Vanuatu to have confidence in their talents and not be afraid to pursue opportunities.
“If you have a skill, don’t be afraid to show it. Believe in yourself and what you can do. If I can do it, then you can do it too.”
VIT represented Vanuatu at the regional competition with three competitors in Restaurant Services, Commercial Cooking and Welding. Beyond the competition, the event provided participants with exposure to international industry standards while strengthening regional partnerships in technical and vocational education.
VIT acknowledged the support of Pacific Australia Skills and the Ministry of Education and Training, whose assistance made Vanuatu’s participation in the competition possible.
