Over 20 patients received free screenings and medication as part of awareness efforts on asthma.
Vila Central Hospital (VCH) marked its first-ever celebration of World Asthma Day on Tuesday, May 6, by offering free treatment and consultations to more than 20 asthma patients.
World Asthma Day is observed on the second Tuesday of May each year to raise global awareness and improve treatment for people living with asthma, commonly known in Vanuatu as “short wind.”
Dr. Terina Bangalini, who leads asthma care at VCH, said the event included patient assessments, free medication, and information handouts.
“We screened patients from the emergency ward with prior appointments, checked how they’re managing asthma, and gave free treatment based on their condition.”
A Chinese medical team currently working with the hospital also assisted in the care program.
Dr. Rui Wang, one of the team’s asthma specialists, said the activity was important due to the high number of local asthma cases.
“It’s good to bring patients together, assess them properly, and provide the help they need.”
He said common asthma triggers in Vanuatu include flu, certain foods, and strong smells.
Long-term patient Susan Taiwia, who has lived with asthma for 36 years, shared that physical activity, especially cricket, helps reduce her symptoms.
“I don’t get asthma attacks when I play cricket. I encourage others to try sports — it helps a lot.”
VCH reports that it admits about 3 to 4 asthma patients per week for treatment.
