Vanuatu has returned home from the 2026 MSG Prime Minister’s Cup in Fiji with a strong finish, led by the Vanuatu Women’s National Team, who were crowned champions.
The women’s title was secured after a dramatic penalty moment, with goalkeeper Amelia Reddy making the crucial save that helped Vanuatu claim the gold medal.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper was later named Best Female Goalkeeper of the tournament and received VT150,000 from Prime Minister Jotham Napat in recognition of her outstanding performance.
Speaking to VBTC News, Reddy said the award was a special moment for her.
“This is my first time receiving an award like this. I’m really happy and grateful.”
Reddy, who has been playing football for around 10 years, says the journey has not always been easy, especially when training becomes demanding.
But she says giving up was never an option.
“Don’t think down on yourself. Don’t give up. Yes, the training will be hard, but at the end of the day, it’s worth it.”
She says her mindset going into this year’s tournament was stronger than before, with a clear determination to achieve something with the team.
Her message to young female players is simple , keep working, believe in yourself and remember that every effort counts.
“Everything counts. The country will depend on you and recognise it.”
While the women lifted the trophy, Vanuatu’s men’s team finished as runners-up, with hosts Fiji taking the men’s title.
Vanuatu also collected several individual honours, with Nelly Kaltak named Best Player in the women’s competition, while Tony Kaltak finished as top scorer. The women’s team also received the Fair Play Team Trophy.
Vanuatu has now received the ceremonial canoe and will host the 2027 MSG Prime Minister’s Cup, giving the country the opportunity to welcome the Melanesian football family to its home ground.
