Vanuatu has emerged as a key champion of regional sports development following the 6th Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Sports Ministers Meeting in Suva, Fiji, where leaders endorsed major reforms that will transform the sporting landscape across Melanesia.
Chaired by Fiji’s Minister for Youth and Sports, Hon. Jese Saukuru, the meeting brought together Sports Ministers and officials from all five MSG member countries to drive a shared vision of stronger sporting partnerships, expanded opportunities for athletes, and the successful launch of the Melanesian Games in 2029.
Representing Vanuatu, Minister of Youth Development and Sports Hon. Job Sam Andy joined fellow Sports Ministers in deliberating key initiatives aimed at expanding sporting opportunities for athletes and young people across the region.
Prior to the Sports Ministers Meeting, a Technical Taskforce Committee comprising ChiefExecutive Officers of national sports commissions and authorities from Melanesian countries met to finalize the draft Melanesian Games Charter, which will guide the implementation of the new regional sporting competition beginning in 2029.
The draft Charter was subsequently presented to the Directors of Sports from all MSG membercountries, who met earlier this week to deliberate on and endorse the document before forwarding it to the Sports Ministers for final approval.
The endorsement of the Melanesian Games Charter marks a significant milestone for regional sport. The Charter establishes a framework for the introduction of the Melanesian Games in 2029, which will initially feature six sporting disciplines and provide a new platform for sporting excellence, youth development, cultural exchange, and regional unity.
During the discussions, Vanuatu successfully proposed the inclusion of men’s and women’s boxing as an additional sporting discipline for the 2027 MSG Prime Ministers Cup, which Vanuatu will host. The recommendation received support from technical officials and forms part of a broader phased approach towards the full implementation of the Melanesian Games Charter in 2029.
Under this approach, additional sporting disciplines will gradually be introduced into MSG PM Cup in 2028 in Solomon Islands allowing member countries to progressively build their capacity and gain a clearer understanding of the logistical and financial requirements associated with hosting and participating in the full Melanesian Games programme.
Ministers and officials agreed that this gradual expansion will ensure all five Melanesian countries are adequately prepared when the inaugural Melanesian Games are fully implemented in 2029.
Another important outcome of the technical meetings was the approval of a proposal requiring each MSG member country to provide an annual seed financial contribution dedicated specifically to supporting the future administration and delivery of the Melanesian Games through the MSG Secretariat.
Officials noted that while member countries already contribute annual membership fees to the MSG Secretariat, the proposed sports contribution would be separate and earmarked solely for the development and coordination of Melanesian sporting events.
Currently, the MSG Secretariat does not have a dedicated budget for the Melanesian Games, and participating governments are responsible for meeting the costs associated with hosting and participating in regional competitions.
The Melanesian sports ministers reaffirmed their collective commitment to investing in sport as a powerful tool for youth empowerment, healthy communities, social inclusion, and regional partnership.
The outcomes of the 6th MSG Sports Ministers Meeting have established a strong foundation for greater regional cooperation, sustainable sports development, and increased opportunities for athletes and young people throughout Melanesia.
