Port Vila, Vanuatu – [21 February 2025] – Prime Minister Jotham Napat has affirmed Vanuatu’s strong solidarity with the Government of Australia following the recent sanctions imposed in response to the Medibank Private cyberattack.

He says Vanuatu commends this decisive action, which highlights the increasing global threat posed by ransomware attacks and underscores the urgent need for international cooperation in cybersecurity.

“Vanuatu has experienced firsthand the devastating impact of ransomware attacks and stands shoulder to shoulder with Australia in its efforts to hold perpetrators accountable and strengthen collective cybersecurity resilience,” said the Mr. Napat.

He went on to say, “The Government of the Republic of Vanuatu recognizes that no nation is immune to cyber threats and supports all measures that contribute to a safer and more secure digital environment. Strengthening international partnerships and implementing robust cybersecurity frameworks remain crucial in the fight against cybercrime.”

“No country can rely on domestic legislation alone to deal with cyber-attacks or cybercrime, as by their very nature, these threats transcend national borders. Global partnerships and engagement are crucial in fostering robust mechanisms to counter cybercrime,” he said.

Prime Minister Napat commends Australia’s leadership in taking proactive measures and reaffirms Vanuatu’s commitment to fostering a secure and resilient cyberspace for all.

“The Government of the Republic of Vanuatu will continue to advocate for stronger international collaboration to combat ransomware threats and ensure that digital infrastructure across the Pacific remains secure and protected,” said the Prime Minister.
