Luganville, Vanuatu – The Vanuatu Police Force and Mobile Force in Luganville, Santo, have joined efforts with key stakeholders to tackle the growing crime rates affecting local communities. A four-day training session last week brought together officers from both forces, equipping them with strategies to manage community crime more effectively.
Commander North, George Songi, told VBTC News that the training aimed to strengthen partnerships among stakeholders to ensure a coordinated approach in addressing crime-related challenges.
“We are identifying key concepts that can be used to ensure all stakeholders understand the issue and work together to address the crimes occurring in our communities,” Commander Songi said.
He emphasized that community policing would play a crucial role in enhancing public safety and security.
“If we improve our systems and continuously conduct awareness campaigns in communities, we can see a real difference. We have been running similar awareness programs since the early 2000s, and it is time to change our approach. Repeating the same strategies will not be enough,” he added.
Crime Prevention Officer Sergeant Kingsley Warreck highlighted major concerns raised by communities, particularly regarding drug-related crimes.
“Whenever we engage with the community, they always bring up drug-related issues, especially in remote areas where regular policing services have difficulty reaching. Drug-related crimes and alcohol-related incidents remain significant concerns,” he explained.
Commander Songi commended parents for their role in guiding young people and children toward reducing crime in their communities. He urged families and community leaders to continue their efforts in fostering a safer environment for all.
