The Vanuatu government is closely monitoring progress on the assessment of structural damage in the Port-Vila Central Business District (CBD), with the Recovery Operations Center (ROC), led by the Office of the Prime Minister, prioritizing the evaluation and certification of severely damaged buildings. These assessments are crucial to facilitating the phased reopening of the vital economic hub.
As part of the ongoing recovery efforts, the demolition of two significant buildings—Chantilly’s On The Bay and La Case De Andrea—has been identified as a key priority. Both building owners have voluntarily requested demolitions following their own structural evaluations, with the government stepping in to oversee and expedite the process. The demolitions aim to improve traffic flow and support business continuity in the area.
Further assessments are also underway for other critical structures, including Lolam House and Olympic House. These evaluations, which are being carried out in multiple stages, may involve third-party re-assessments, contributing to delays in finalizing the overall recovery plan.
Director General Cherol Ianna Ala stressed the importance of safety throughout the demolition process, noting, “We understand that demolition is a complex, highly technical process, and must be thoroughly investigated before proceeding. Safety remains the government’s top priority. Our economic recovery depends heavily on how quickly and safely we can secure and clear the delimited no-go zones.”
The government remains focused on ensuring the swift and secure recovery of the Port-Vila CBD, working towards restoring normalcy to this critical part of the city’s economy.
