The Tanna Ferry will pay a fine to the Department of Biosecurity after failing to comply with an order that prohibits ships from leaving Port Vila after 5:00 PM.
The order was implemented to help control the spread of the Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB), a destructive pest threatening Vanuatu’s coconut industry.
The Vanuatu Maritime Services Authority (VMSA) confirmed that Tanna Ferry did not adhere to the restriction, and a formal notice has been issued to the ferry’s management, requiring payment of the fine.
In response, Peter Pata, the management representative for Tanna Ferry, acknowledged the fine but raised concerns over the lack of support for ship operators, especially in the wake of the December 17 earthquake.
He explained that the inaccessibility of the wharf and the time-consuming loading process have caused delays, making it challenging for operators to meet the set departure times.
More to come.
