A solution to Port Vila’s overcrowded cemetery is near, with a new facility set to open early next year.
The Port Vila City Council (PVCC) is preparing to open a new cemetery in Eratap early next year. According to Amos Ronnie, Manager for Facility, Community, and Events at PVCC, only a few tasks remain before the cemetery can begin operations.
Mr. Ronnie emphasized that the current cemetery is nearing capacity, making the new development a critical need for Port Vila residents. “The council’s aim is to make the new cemetery accessible early next year. Once a date is finalized, the public will be informed,” he stated.
The layout and plot spacing for the new cemetery have already been completed, but some additional work, including constructing an access road for funeral vehicles, division walls, and fencing, is still underway. Ronnie highlighted the cemetery’s planned “Memorial Garden,” which will feature flower plantings to create a serene space for families visiting their loved ones.
Regarding burial fees, Ronnie mentioned a slight increase from the current charges due to the new site’s location but assured the public that the difference would not be significant. Approval of the new fees is pending and will be communicated once finalized.
As efforts continue, Ronnie reaffirmed PVCC’s commitment to completing the necessary work and ensuring the facility is ready to serve the community soon.
