Communities in Central Pentecost are one step closer to better access to essential services following the completion of the first section of the Line 2 Pentecost Road Project.

Shanghai Construction Group (SCG) completed the first major section of the project on 10 July, marking a significant milestone in efforts to improve transport and connect more communities across the island.

The completed section stretches from Wandusangwul Corner in Melsisi to the top of the Ilamre hill in Central Pentecost 2. Construction began in January 2026, with heavy machinery clearing one of the island’s most challenging mountain terrains.

Residents believe the new road will make it easier for children to travel to school, improve access to health services, and help farmers transport their produce to markets.

Community representative Albert Vireibo thanked the Government of Vanuatu, the Penama Public Works Department and Shanghai Construction Group for delivering the project.

He said the road would bring long-term benefits to communities by improving access to essential services and creating new economic opportunities.

Although the first section has been completed, the road remains temporarily closed for up to 30 days while construction work continues. Public Works and the contractor will announce when the section is ready to reopen.

Shanghai Construction Group is expected to begin work on the next section of the project in the coming weeks.

Once fully completed, the Line 2 Pentecost Road Project is expected to improve transport across the island, strengthen access to government services, support local farmers, improve emergency response times, and create new opportunities for tourism and economic development.
