Pastor Gideon Yoaki, District Superintendent of the Church of the Nazarene in Vanuatu, has voiced his support for the government’s efforts to develop a National Policy opposing the promotion of same-sex relationships.
In a recent statement, Pastor Yoaki emphasized the importance of aligning with Vanuatu’s Christian values, reflecting on the nation’s motto, “Long God Yumi Stanap” (With God We Stand).
He asserted that while human rights laws exist, they should not supersede divine principles. “God is more than that law; we can’t correct Him in anything,” he stated.
He also expressed a compassionate view towards individuals identifying as same sex, encouraging prayer and guidance to embrace their God-given identities as male or female.
In contrast, the VPride Foundation, a local organization supporting LGBTQ+ rights, did not provide a comment when approached by VBTC NEWS.
Concerns have been raised on social media by various community groups expressing dissatisfaction with the Ministry of Justice’s recent decision.
Anne Pakoa, Chief Executive Officer of the Vanuatu Human Rights Coalition, labeled the government’s stance as discriminatory.
In response, the Ministry of Justice defended its position, stating that same-sex relationships are contrary to Vanuatu’s customs and constitution.
