Parliament sitting was adjourned this morning by Speaker Hon. Stephen Dorrick Felix due to safety concerns following a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck last night.
According to the Speaker, no official assessment report has yet been provided to confirm whether the Parliament House building is structurally safe. He stated that while assessments were conducted after last year’s earthquake, his office has not received any conclusive report to date.
“Without a clear assessment on the safety of the building, it is my responsibility to ensure the wellbeing of all Honourable Members,” the Speaker said.
Parliament had resumed last Thursday for the opening of the First Ordinary Session of 2025 and was scheduled to reconvene this morning. However, the sitting has now been postponed to Wednesday this week at 2:00 p.m.
