Ni-Vanuatu Worker Found Dead in Australia During Labour Mobility Program

The Department of Labour has confirmed the tragic passing of Joe Koumera, a 42-year-old Ni-Vanuatu worker involved in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) program. Mr. Koumera, from Tanna Island, was working under a short-term contract with PLL Contractors Pty Ltd in Renmark, Adelaide, when he went missing.

Mr. Koumera was last seen socializing with fellow workers by the Murray River on the evening of Saturday, October 12. He did not report for work the following day, prompting concerns when he could not be located at his accommodation or among his friends.

Authorities from the South Australian Police reported that Mr. Koumera’s wallet and phone were discovered near the riverbank. Following an extensive search, his body was recovered on Monday afternoon, October 14.

While the police have indicated that there are no initial suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, a coroner’s inquest will further explore the potential role of alcohol. Those who were with Mr. Koumera have been cooperating with the investigation.

The Department of Labour extends its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Koumera’s family during this difficult time and emphasizes the importance of safety and self-care for all Ni-Vanuatu workers abroad. They urge workers to uphold their responsibilities and take necessary precautions for their well-being while participating in the Labour Mobility Program.
