Ni-Vanuatu Seasonal Worker Deported from Australia for Breaching Visa Conditions

A ni-Vanuatu seasonal worker has been deported from Australia after failing to comply with the conditions of their visa—prompting renewed calls from the Government of Vanuatu for all overseas workers to respect their visa terms and employment obligations.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed the deportation this week, noting it as part of a series of similar incidents where workers were sent back from Australia for overstaying or violating their visa and work agreements.

In a statement issued today, the Ministry stressed that this case should serve as a serious reminder that immigration compliance is not optional. Law enforcement officers in host countries like Australia are actively monitoring seasonal workers, and non-compliance can result in deportation, financial penalties, and permanent bans from future participation in the programs.

Minister of Internal Affairs, Hon. Andrew Napuat, expressed concern that such incidents continue to affect not only the individuals involved but also tarnish the reputation of ni-Vanuatu workers across seasonal employment schemes.

“This action reflects badly on our people. The Government has continuously advised seasonal workers to return home before their visas expire,” Minister Napuat said. “We want our workers to maintain their good standing so that these programs remain open and strong for future participants.”

He added that previous Ministers had issued the same warning, and it remains critical that workers follow these instructions.

The Government also highlighted that these seasonal work schemes provide vital income for many ni-Vanuatu families and communities. Any misconduct puts these benefits at risk for everyone.

While reaffirming its commitment to protecting workers and improving the program, the Government of Vanuatu is continuing dialogue with both the Australian and New Zealand governments to find long-term solutions and better support mechanisms for ni-Vanuatu workers abroad.

Workers who are currently overseas and may have concerns are strongly encouraged to contact their Country Liaison Officers or the Department of Labour and Employment Services for assistance.
