During the first extraordinary sitting of Parliament, a heated discussion took place over the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Utilities’ budget, with a particular focus on road projects.

Hon. Seoule Simeon, Member of Parliament for Epi Constituency, raised concerns regarding the lack of progress on road development in his community. He questioned the Minister responsible for Infrastructure about the allocation of funds for road projects in Epi.

“Last year, the Shefa Division was allocated VT9 million, followed by VT13 million, but no work was done. I urge the government not to forget the island that is the heart of Vanuatu. Today, many people living in Efate benefit from what comes out of my island. I have been elected in that island for four terms, but the roads have never been repaired. The airport had to close, and I had to use my own resources to maintain the roads with tractors and bulldozers. This is not fair. Since I was elected in 2016, nothing has changed in terms of road conditions,” said MP Simeon.

In response, Hon. Xavier Harry, Minister of Public Works, acknowledged the concerns and stated that the budget was set with political interests in mind.

“I agree with our colleague. The Ministry of Public Works has set up the budget with political considerations. However, the decision has been made that this year and next year, the budget will be allocated to support the most important activities and ensure the work is spread out throughout the country,” said Minister Harry.

The debate over the budget highlights ongoing challenges in addressing infrastructure needs, particularly in remote areas like Epi.
