The Ministry of Health (MOH) has confirmed that 11 people are currently living with HIV in Vanuatu, out of a total of 17 individuals diagnosed to date. Among the 11 active cases, six are women and five are men.
This update comes as Vanuatu’s health authorities increase surveillance following a major HIV outbreak in Fiji. In 2024, Fiji’s Ministry of Health reported over 1,000 HIV cases between January and September, prompting concerns across the Pacific region.
In response, the Ministry of Health in Vanuatu has stepped up awareness and prevention campaigns. Annie Tiaset, Manager of HIV and AIDS at the Ministry, said targeted outreach is underway — particularly for ni-Vanuatu students studying abroad.
“We have an education plan that we’ve started rolling out to students in Fiji. We’ve partnered with the Scholarship Office and conducted awareness sessions earlier this year so students know what’s happening and where to go for help,” she said. Tiaset also noted that the Ministry has identified health services in Fiji where ni-Vanuatu students can access support.
She emphasized that Vanuatu continues efforts to test and support individuals within communities. “The treatment we offer must be taken daily. While it does not cure HIV, it suppresses the virus to help individuals live longer, healthier lives,” she said.
Tiaset stressed that HIV is not a disease to fear. “People should not be afraid. It’s important to come forward, get tested, and receive treatment early.
