Locally Owned TAM-TAM Fuel Station Set to Replace D-Dock, Bringing Jobs and Community Support

The former D-Dock fuel station in Port Vila is preparing to reopen under a new name and local ownership. Now known as TAM-TAM Petroleum, the station is owned by Ni-Vanuatu couple Nazario and Magalie Fiakaifonu, who are preparing to relaunch the station with upgraded services and a strong focus on empowering local business.

The couple say the new station will offer similar services as before, but with plans to improve operations over time. For the Fiakaifonus, TAM-TAM is more than a fuel station—it’s a symbol of local pride and resilience.

“We are very fortunate to talk about this new business. We are the first Ni-Vanuatu to take over the D-Dock fuel station. This is a big opportunity for us and our family,” said Mr. Fiakaifonu. “We hope this will show foreign investors that locals can also run successful businesses in Vanuatu.”

The reopening comes as a positive development following last year’s devastating earthquake, which caused the loss of around 900 jobs across the country. The new owners already employ more than 350 locals across their existing businesses and plan to recruit over 20 new staff for TAM-TAM once operations begin.

Previously known for its 24-hour service, the station will initially operate from 6am to 7pm as Port Vila continues to recover. According to Mrs. Fiakaifonu, the goal is to eventually return to 24-hour operations by July, when an adjoining boutique shop also opens.

“The cost of reopening is high, but we’re placing our trust in the local community to support this business,” she said. The couple also revealed that, like their other businesses, a portion of the station’s profits will go towards community support initiatives.

TAM-TAM Petroleum marks a new chapter for the well-known site—and an inspiring story of local ownership stepping up to drive recovery, jobs, and hope.
