Former Prime Minister Moana Carcasses and wife, Marie Louise, are set to make history as the first couple to contest a national election.
The couple names were included in the official candidate list released by the Vanuatu Electoral Commission for the 2025 snap election. The couple will contest in different constituencies, with Mr Carcasses running for Efate Rural and Marie Louise for Port Vila constituencies both under the Green Confederation Party.
Mr. Carcasses has been a prominent figure in Vanuatu politics since his first election in 2002. Over the years, he has held key roles, including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Internal Affairs. In this election, he is one of 21 candidates vying for five seats in Efate Rural Constituency.
Ms. Marie Louise, formerly the Deputy Lady Mayor and a Councilor of Port Vila City Council, resigned from her municipal roles to run for a seat in the Port Vila Constituency. She is one of seven women candidates in this snap election who will be competing for five seats in the Port Vila Constituency along with 31 others.
If successful, they will become the first husband-and-wife duo to serve in Parliament together, marking a historic milestone in Vanuatu politics.
