Dry Season Brings Cooler Nights and Less Rainfall Across Vanuatu

Vanuatu has entered its annual dry season, which runs from May to October. The Department of Meteorology and Geo-Hazards (VMGD) says people across the islands should expect cooler conditions and limited rainfall over the coming months.

Glenda Pakoa, Acting Manager of the Climate Division, said that while some rain is still expected, many parts of the country—especially in the south—will see lower than average rainfall.

“Normally when we move into our dry season, we receive less rainfall,” she said. “It doesn’t mean we won’t get any rain at all, but it will be less compared to the wet season. Some areas in the south might start to see water tanks going down as we move deeper into the dry period.”

Cooler nights are also expected throughout the season.

“Typical dry season conditions over Vanuatu include cooler nights, dry weather, not much rain, and dominant south-easterly trade winds,” Ms. Pakoa explained. “These winds bring cool air, which is why we’re experiencing colder conditions on the islands.”

She added that the southern islands can expect more cold fronts during this period. These may bring short bursts of heavy rain, especially in the southern and central parts of the country.

“These conditions will also bring other changes,” Ms. Pakoa said. “We’ll notice some areas becoming drier, water levels in tanks dropping, and rougher seas along the coast. These are normal for the dry season, but we must stay alert, especially for health and safety concerns.”

The dry season will continue until the end of October.
