“It Starts at Home”: Communities Speak Out on Youth Disengagement

Communities are calling for a stronger collective effort to tackle youth disengagement, with many saying parents, community leaders and young people all have a role to play in addressing the growing concern.

The issue was widely discussed during VBTC News’ Tokbak programme, where callers shared their views on the challenges facing young people and suggested practical solutions.

One parent said many disengaged youths could benefit from returning to their home islands, where opportunities exist in agriculture and community life.

“I think families should encourage young people to return to the islands where work is available. They can plant food crops or kava to earn an income.”

The parent also said chiefs and community leaders have an important role in guiding young people.

“Chiefs need to spend more time talking with them in the nakamal, guiding them away from harmful behaviour, involving them in church activities and community work. Our leaders must work harder because the future of Vanuatu depends on our young people.”

A young caller said the issue often begins at home, stressing that parents play a critical role in guiding their children.

“I believe it starts in the home. Today many parents are busy and spend little time with their children, whether they are in school or not. Without that guidance, young people can easily be influenced by others.”

The caller said stronger parenting could help reduce risky behaviour among young people.

“When you walk through town at night, you see teenagers drinking and you ask, ‘Where are their parents?’ Parents must teach their children at home so when they go out, they carry those values with them.”

The discussion highlighted growing public concern over youth disengagement and reinforced calls for families, chiefs, churches and communities to work together to create positive opportunities and strengthen guidance for the next generation.
