Business owners and residents living in the Bukura area have decided to contribute money themselves to repair the worsening road from the entrance of Bukura to Devils Point.
The road, which has long been in poor condition, has been a consistent concern for locals who have repeatedly called on the government to carry out proper repairs. However, over the years, the community has had to rely on small-scale maintenance efforts using their own hands and limited resources.
Island Magic Resort Manager, Mr. Damien Bird, told VBTC News that the residents have now come together and made the decision to raise funds themselves to fix the road.
“Has the government helped out? In my experience, that has not worked out. So just us residents living here have come up with a decision to just fix this situation ourselves. I have started with a cheque of VT41,000,” Mr. Bird said.
He also explained that the poor road conditions are having a direct impact on the local tourism sector.
“A lot of the tourist buses won’t come down our road, so we have to rely on local guides to bring visitors in,” he said.
A tourist visiting from Australia also shared their thoughts, saying the road was in very bad shape and it affected their overall travel experience.
A local student from the area noted that the poor condition of the road means buses often cannot reach their homes, and many times they are forced to walk long distances.
VBTC News attempted to get a comment from the Public Works Department (PWD) and authorities concerned but was unable to reach them at the time of reporting.
