    Air Pollution Harms Health Worldwide

Air pollution is a serious problem that affects the health of millions of people around the world. Studies indicates air pollution causes diseases like asthma, lung cancer, and heart problems. Often called a “silent killer” because it can lead to serious health problems without obvious symptoms. It is known to cause premature births, chronic respiratory diseases, and neurodevelopment issues in children.

These health risks highlight the need for clean air and effective public health measures. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution leads to about five million premature deaths each year. This issue is especially harmful to women and children, who are more vulnerable to its effects.

During the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, a live discussion was held at the United Nations pavilion under the theme, “The power of health to unlock climate action”, where the WHO emphasized urgent need to address air pollution. Countries are being urged to improve their health systems and tackle this growing crisis.

Dr. Maria Niera, a key figure at WHO, stated that the climate crisis is also a health crisis, linking the two issues closely. She calls for adequate transition.

“We can reduce five million premature deaths every year if we transition to sustainable food systems and we promote by doing so. Healthy diets for the people that we are trying to protect every year,” Niera said.

Experts at COP29 discussed the importance of integrating climate policies with health issues. They pointed out that air pollution is one of the main challenges facing the world today. Children are particularly affected, becoming victims of the harmful effects of pollution.

To protect public health, immediate action is needed to reduce air pollution. This includes implementing policies in transportation, energy, and industry, as well as improving health systems to address pollution-related issues. The fight against air pollution is crucial for the health of people everywhere. By taking action now, countries can work towards a cleaner environment and better health for all.
