Five detainees have been approved for release on parole following a Parole Board sitting held at the Isangel Correctional Centre in Tanna.

This marks the first time the Parole Board has convened in Tanna, with the outcome seeing five detainees granted parole.

Three of the detainees were officially released yesterday afternoon, while the remaining two are expected to be released next week in line with their scheduled timelines.

VBTC News was present to witness the release, where detainees signed their parole licenses with assistance from probation officers before returning to their communities.

Director of Correctional Services, Johnny Marango, described the moment as significant for the province.

“It is a proud moment for Tafea. This is the first parole release on Tanna. What we witnessed is what we call unlocking the second prison — giving detainees a second chance. It shows the system is working, where detainees serve part of their sentence and then reintegrate into the community with support from families.”

He said the parole system allows detainees to serve part of their sentence in custody before completing the remainder within the community, helping them reconnect with their families and rebuild their lives.

Probation Officer at Tanna Correctional Centre, Sam Harrison Kapalu, clarified that the detainees are not fully free but will remain under supervision.

“They are not completely free yet. They are being released back into the community under conditions set by the Parole Board. We will continue to work with them, guide them, and ensure they follow their parole conditions.”

Family members were also present at the correctional centre gate, welcoming the detainees back with traditional garlands, marking an emotional reunion.
