Easter 7’s Games Cut Short Due to Time Limit & Poor Lighting

The Vodafone Easter 7’s could not reach the final this year after time restrictions prevented the games from continuing, forcing team managers to make decisions following the semi-finals.

After many years of organizing the Easter 7’s, the VRU noticed that spectator turnout this year was lower than previous years, reflecting the growing development of rugby in Port Vila.

Ten teams competed in this year’s tournament.

As a one-day competition held on a public holiday, it attracted a large number of fans and supporters who came to cheer for their teams.

VBTC Sports was at Independence Park, witnessing the action across the women’s competition, under-20 boys, and senior men’s matches.

Many of the teams have participated in previous annual competitions, and a new team, OL Jif, joined this year.

VBTC Sports spoke with the captain of Shepherds United after the semi-finals:

“As the captain, the under-20 team is doing well, and our main senior team is also performing strongly. We are just waiting for the results for both Shepherds teams.” – Seule Sam

Ruben Sablan, senior head coach of Ifira Black Bird Rugby Club, emphasized that sport is a tool to keep youth away from negative influences:

“I want to get more youths into rugby to keep them out from other bad activities, and the crowds were amazing.”

The Ifira women’s team also acknowledged the tournament sponsors for their support.

Although the matches were intense, they did not meet all supporters’ expectations. Time limits, poor lighting, and venue issues prevented the games from continuing. As a result, team managers agreed to share the prize money from the main sponsor among all semi-finalist teams: Tanvasoko, Ifira, Shepherds, Bulldogs, Police, Pythons, Ovins, and OL Chiefs.
