The family of a 17-year-old boy has spoken out after an alleged assault incident involving two senior seafarers last week, which has since gone viral on social media.
The incident, which reportedly took place on a vessel, shows two adult men threatening the boy. In the video, one man is seen whipping him with a strap, while another attempts to push him towards the sea.
Following the incident, the Vanuatu Maritime Safety Authority (VMSA) has taken swift action, suspending the licenses of the two seafarers for six months.
VMSA Commissioner, Less John Napuati, confirmed the decision, stating that suspension letters have already been issued while investigations continue.
“As of today, I can confirm that suspension letters have been issued to the two seafarers concerned. Investigations will be completed this week, and they will be given an opportunity to respond before any final decision, including possible termination of their licenses,” he said.
He stressed that such behavior has no place in Vanuatu’s maritime sector.
“VMSA does not condone or allow such behavior to happen onboard any vessel operating in Vanuatu waters. We will also pursue criminal action as this is unacceptable,” Mr Napuati added.
On the victim’s side, the boy’s family has expressed deep concern over the incident.
The boy’s uncle, Enias Stapas, said the family is now preparing a report to be submitted to police.
“We are very concerned about what happened. If the ship was moving and they threw him into the sea, it could have been much worse. Right now, we are in the process of making a police report,” he said.
The 17-year-old boy, originally from the Banks Islands, was reportedly undertaking sea-time training with hopes of becoming a seafarer when the incident occurred.
The Vanuatu National Youth Council has also condemned the incident, saying it raises serious concerns about the safety of young people in training environments.
Council representative George Worworbu described the situation as unfortunate and called for strong action against those involved.
“It is very unfortunate that this young person went through such violence and disrespect. We encourage young people to stay strong and not give up despite challenges,” he said.
According to VMSA, the suspended seafarers are not allowed to work on any vessel during the suspension period. Authorities have also indicated that their licenses could be permanently terminated depending on the outcome of the investigation.
