The National University of Vanuatu (NUV) has released the names of the three successful candidates awarded the SMART Cable Scholarship, an initiative funded by the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation in partnership with the University of Hawai‘i and NUV.
From a press release it states that the scholarship program supports Ni-Vanuatu professionals to pursue a Master of Science (Professional) or Master of Data Science (Professional) at James Cook University (JCU), with the goal of strengthening national expertise in scientific research, environmental monitoring, and data analysis.
A total of 32 applications were submitted. Applicants holding a Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent and providing complete academic transcripts were pre-selected, leading to 17 candidates progressing to the final assessment. A joint evaluation committee—comprising representatives from the Department of Communications & Digital Transformation, the Vanuatu Meteorology & Geohazards Department, the University of Hawai‘i and NUV—conducted the final review.
The three selected candidates are:
- Ms Rerena Vatu – Master of Data Science (Professional), selected based on her work as a data analyst in the Department of Volcanology and Seismology, directly relevant to data expected from the SMART Cable system.
- Ms Stephanie Matalue – Master of Science (Professional), ranked first following assessment of academic performance.
- Ms Melinda Aru – Master of Science (Professional), selected second for her extensive scientific experience at the Vanuatu Meteorology & Geohazards Department.
The SMART Cable Project is a pioneering initiative that integrates scientific sensors into submarine telecommunication cables to collect deep-ocean and seismic data. The project will significantly enhance Vanuatu’s capacity for disaster preparedness, ocean monitoring, and environmental research.
The announcement was made on Friday, 14 November 2025, during a briefing held at NUV’s main campus. NUV Vice-Chancellor Mr Jean-Pierre Nirua emphasised the national importance of the project, stating:
“The SMART Cable Project represents a major step forward for Vanuatu’s scientific and technological capabilities. Ensuring that Ni-Vanuatu professionals can lead in this field is essential for strengthening national resilience and innovation.”
NUV acknowledged the continued partnership with the Gordon & Betty Moore Foundation, the University of Hawai‘i, and James Cook University in advancing scientific training and research capability in Vanuatu.
NUV’s development is aligned with the Vanuatu People’s Plan and the Vanuatu Education and Training Sector Strategic Plan. Its education programs reflect the country’s National Human Resource Development Plan 2020–2030 (NHRDP).
