Vanuatu Stands Tall at COP30: Championing Island Survival and Climate Action in Brazil

Vanuatu’s delegation is at the forefront of global climate negotiations at the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the UNFCCC in Belém, Brazil, fighting for the survival of the nation and its people against the existential threat of climate change.

A press release from VANKIRAP states that for the past week, Vanuatu’s dedicated negotiators have been a strong voice for the country, advocating on critical climate issues such as securing Loss and Damage funding, maintaining the 1.5°C survival limit, and ensuring enforceable action rather than empty promises.

The delegation’s courage and commitment have been widely praised, reflecting the nation’s unwavering determination to secure a just and resilient future for all Ni-Vanuatu.

Pacific Leadership in Action
Mrs. Florence Iautu, Pacific Small Island Developing States lead on the Global Stocktake, shared the personal sacrifices required for her seventh COP participation. “As a mother, it’s not easy when you have to leave your home for long periods of time… My family supports me and encourages me to keep representing our people,” she said.

Vanuatu is using COP30 as a platform to highlight climate resilience initiatives and community-driven adaptation projects, including the Adaptation to Climate Change in Coastal Zone Project – Phase II (VCAP-II). This project strengthens vulnerable coastlines, improves food and water security, and empowers communities with climate-smart solutions.

Science, Technology, and Innovation
The delegation also showcased Vanuatu’s collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF). Key initiatives include:

  • Van-KIRAP Project: USD$22 million Green Climate Fund initiative for improved climate information services.
  • VMGD Weather App: Provides real-time forecasts and geo-hazard alerts.
  • Economic Impact: Every dollar invested in Climate Information Services yields up to USD$4.50 in avoided damages.
  • Community Engagement: New weather stations, like Port Resolution, Tanna, and the ClimateWatch App, which has gathered over 800 observations from citizen scientists.

Mr. Levu Antfalo, Director of the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-hazards Department, highlighted the value of climate information services: “Investing in our Climate Information Services across our Pacific Islands can save us all millions.”

Collaboration and Representation
The Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion has been a key hub for Pacific negotiators, offering a space for collaboration, networking, and advocacy. Glenda Pakoa, Acting Manager of the Climate Division at VMGD, emphasized its importance: “It’s our space for connection and collaboration… a piece of home within the international space.”

Vanuatu’s delegation is leveraging every opportunity at COP30 to ensure the voices of Pacific islands are heard, championing science-based decision-making and demonstrating the power of community-led climate resilience.
