Island Fortune Ships Launched for Shepherds Outer Islands

The Shepherds Outer Islands Constituency celebrated a major milestone on Thursday, 26 September 2025, with the launch of Island Fortune 1 and Island Fortune 2 , two new passenger ships that will transform travel and connectivity for island communities.

The vessels, operated by South Pacific Shipping & Development Ltd (SPSD), are designed to provide safe, fast, and affordable passenger services. Leaders say the ships will replace unsafe banana boats, expand transport options, boost tourism, and improve access for families and businesses across the islands.

Member of Parliament and First Deputy Speaker, Hon. John William Timakata, who led the project, said the launch marked the first step in his vision to transform the Shepherds Outer Islands into a future development hub.

“These ships are not just vessels,” MP Timakata told the gathering. “They are like bridges that connect families, businesses, and the future of our people.”

The project has received strong backing from Chinese investors. Deputy Prime Minister Johnny Koanapo praised both the initiative and MP Timakata’s leadership.

“It is good to have leadership that can bring business partners to invest in the country and direct those investments into development,” Koanapo said. “This is what national progress looks like vision, partnership, and delivery.”

Beyond safer travel, the project will also train local workers in shipping operations, port management, and agency services, creating new jobs and strengthening the local economy.

For the people of the Shepherds Outer Islands, Island Fortune 1 and Island Fortune 2 are not just ships sitting in a harbor , they symbolize hope, stronger communities, and a more connected and prosperous future.
