The Vanuatu Police Force has met with the executive members of the “No to Corruption” advocacy group ahead of Vanuatu’s 46th Independence celebrations, as police seek to ensure public safety while respecting citizens’ constitutional rights.

The meeting, held on 28 July, was led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police and focused on the group’s planned advocacy activities during the Independence period.

According to the Vanuatu Police Force, officers explained the legal responsibilities that apply to all individuals and organisations, including provisions under the Public Order Act, Penal Code Act, Harmful Digital Communications Act and the Cybercrime Act.

Police said the executive members of the “No to Corruption” group assured them they have no plans to boycott, disrupt or interfere with the Independence celebrations.

The VPF welcomed the assurance, saying the meeting was intended as a preventative and informative engagement to ensure any advocacy activities remain peaceful, lawful and respectful of the rights of others.

The Force also responded to a video later published on social media by Mr Dinh Augustin Gilou, describing it as misleading because it did not accurately reflect the purpose or outcome of the meeting. Police said the video failed to acknowledge the group’s assurance that it would not disrupt the national celebrations.

The VPF said the meeting formed part of its community policing approach and its responsibility to prevent potential breaches of the law and maintain public order during an important national event.

The Police Force also reaffirmed that it remains politically neutral and does not support or oppose any political party, civil society organisation or advocacy group. It said its role is to uphold the Constitution, enforce the laws of Vanuatu fairly and impartially, and ensure the safety and security of all citizens and visitors.

As Vanuatu prepares to celebrate its 46th Independence Anniversary, the VPF encouraged everyone to exercise their constitutional rights responsibly, express their views peacefully, and work together to promote peace, unity and national pride throughout the celebrations.
