Tanna Records Third Baby Death from Suspected Whooping Cough

A third baby has died on Tanna following a suspected case of whooping cough, bringing the total number of deaths to three and 16 suspected cases since July 6.

The Ministry of Health says eight patients are currently in isolation, with three in critical condition, one stable, and four awaiting discharge.

Health teams are working across seven area councils with support from international partners including UNICEF, WHO, and the Vanuatu Association of Medical Professionals.

Many of the affected children are under five and have not received the pentavalent vaccine, which protects against whooping cough.

The public is urged to ensure all children under five are vaccinated, and to seek medical care immediately if a child shows signs of persistent coughing, fever, or shortness of breath.

Travellers from Tanna are also advised to monitor their health, and communities are reminded to practice good hygiene to prevent the spread of the disease.

Whooping cough primarily affects babies, young children, and pregnant women, causing severe coughing, breathing difficulties, exhaustion, and vomiting.
