The Vanuatu Maritime and Safety Authority (VMSA) has confirmed that all required preparations have been completed to allow the return of the first cruise ship to Port Vila.
This follows months of work to restore operations after the December 2024 earthquake, which disrupted major tourism activities at the capital’s main port.
VMSA says the official arrival of the first cruise ship back in Port Vila is scheduled for Friday, 8 August, marking a key milestone in the recovery process.
On the regulatory side, VMSA has completed a full security assessment of the seafront area. According to VMSA Manager for Policy and Regulatory Affairs, Ms. Seloni Toakuru, the final assessment report was submitted to the Maritime Security Committee under ISPS regulations and has already been endorsed.
“As part of our work, the assessment was submitted around one to two months ago. While a drill exercise was planned, it was later cancelled — VMSA was not informed. However, we are fully prepared to receive the cruise ship,” said Ms. Toakuru.
In addition, the Department of Ports and Harbours developed a security plan, which has been officially approved by the VMSA Commissioner.
An official welcome ceremony will be held on the day of arrival, with Her Excellency Lady Mayor Jenny Tasale to lead the formal reception. The event will also include speeches by Minister of Tourism Samson Samsen and Prime Minister Hon. Jotham Napat, to mark the symbolic return of cruise tourism to Port Vila.
VMSA is appealing to the public for cooperation, as the seafront area will be temporarily closed to allow for safe cruise operations. Portable fencing and signage will be removed afterward to reopen the area for public use.
