Access to clean water and reliable road infrastructure has become an urgent priority for more than 100 residents of Vunarei Village in Bigbay Bush, Santo. The community is grappling with significant challenges related to their water source and transportation.
Jeremie Lulupeli Kiloko, a member of the community, spoke to VBTC News, explaining the daily struggles the villagers face when it comes to accessing water.
“Today, we all need water, but we have to work extra hard for it. We walk down to the creeks every morning to fetch water and prepare our kids for school. We desperately need better access to clean water,” Mr. Kiloko said.
He also highlighted the lack of water at a local primary school in the village. “One school in the village does not have access to good water. It’s a priority for health and sanitation, but nothing is being done about it,” he added.
In addition to the water crisis, Mr. Kiloko pointed out the difficulties villagers face in selling their market products. “For example, when we have big kava bags to sell, we have to walk all the way to the main road at Bunarei Village. We spend the night there and then catch a truck the next morning to head into town,” he explained.
The journey to the main road is an arduous one, taking villagers up to 10 hours. Mr. Kiloko further revealed that villagers often have to climb hills just to get reliable access to the Vodafone network, compounding the challenges they face.
The people of Vunarei Village continue to hope for better infrastructure and essential services to improve their quality of life and access to basic needs.
