Demolition of Chantillys Hotel Underway Following December Earthquake

Port Vila, Vanuatu – The demolition of Chantillys on the Bay in Vatumaru Bay resumed today, marking the end of one of Vanuatu’s most well-known hotels after it sustained severe damage from the 7.4-magnitude earthquake on December 17, 2024.

The four-star hotel, a popular destination for tourists and holidaymakers, is expected to be completely demolished within the next two to three days.

The earthquake resulted in over 60 staff members losing their jobs. While some have secured employment at other hotels, many are still seeking work or struggling to sustain their livelihoods.

Indiana Andeng, a former Chantillys chef, expressed deep sadness upon witnessing the demolition of the hotel where she once worked.

Hope for Banyan Bar & Café Reopening

Despite the loss, there is hope for a revival. Hotel management has indicated plans to reopen Banyan Bar and Café once the demolition is complete and government approvals are secured.

Leo Alex, General Maintenance of Banyan Bar and Café, confirmed that reopening efforts would proceed with government support.

Chantillys on the Bay was originally built in the year 2000 and has been a key part of Port Vila’s tourism industry.
