Luganville’s water system is set for a transformative upgrade, with an amount of around 7 billion vatu funding secured from Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The funding, provided through a partnership between the Vanuatu Government and the Asian Development Bank includes grants and concessional loans to address persistent water challenges.
Caretaker Finance Minister, Johnny Koanapo officially received the funding documents, emphasizing the project’s role in supporting the Greater Luganville Township expansion. “This funding reflects the strong relationships we’ve built with our development partners like ADB,” Koanapo stated.
The project aims to enhance water access and expand supply capacity to new and existing township areas, aligning with the government’s economic corridor concept. “The upgrade will not only support current demands but also ensure capacity for future growth in Luganville and surrounding communities,” Koanapo explained.
Residents in Luganville have long faced water shortages, which the project seeks to address. Care taker Minister Koanapo noted these challenges and called for patience as the initiative rolls out. “We understand the struggles of our people, and this project is a direct response to those issues. We’re working to implement it as quickly as possible,” he said.
The minister also highlighted the involvement of ADB representatives, who will oversee the project’s implementation to ensure its success. “This is a significant infrastructure upgrade, and we ask for everyone’s cooperation as we work through the development stages,” Koanapo added.
In addition to addressing immediate water needs, the project is expected to enhance the quality of life in Luganville by supporting health, sanitation, and economic development. “This investment is a step toward a more sustainable future for our communities,” Koanapo concluded.
With construction set to begin soon, the partnership between the Vanuatu Government and ADB underscores a shared commitment to improving essential services and fostering regional development.
