During the VBTC TOKBAK Show, Mrs. Leias Cullwick, CEO of the Vanuatu National Council of Women (VNCW), discussed the role of women in relation to Nakamals. While acknowledging that Nakamals have traditionally been male-dominated spaces, she emphasized that women will play an active role in the preparation and support of the Nakamal’s official opening. “Women will stand with the chiefs, assisting with food preparation and ceremonial activities,” Cullwick stated, highlighting the importance of respecting both tradition and inclusion.

She also urged parents and elders to guide the youth in understanding and valuing customs. “Respecting the Nakamal means dressing appropriately and preparing food with care—this is a respect we must all nurture.”
