The Vanuatu Archery Federation is set to kick off its 2025 program next week, with training, outreach programs, and preparations for upcoming regional and international competitions.
A major boost for the team comes with the arrival of Moreno Tonetto, an experienced Italian coach, who will be based in Vanuatu for a month to help sharpen the skills of local archers.
Strengthening the Sport in Vanuatu
Archery in Vanuatu has grown significantly in recent years, thanks to successful outreach programs, new equipment, and strong community interest. The Federation has secured a dedicated training field near Korman Cricket Ground, giving athletes a stable base to develop their skills.
Vanuatu Archery Federation President Marcello Pocaterra shared exciting news about the development of the sport:
“This year will be a great one for Vanuatu Archery. We are training our national team, and they are performing well. We also have plans to send two archers to New Zealand to become international judges, which will be a great step forward.”
Mini Games & International Goals
The national team is preparing to compete at the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau, with a mix of experienced and young archers:
• 3 female and 4 male under-18 archers
• One senior archer with international experience
Head coach Francis Runa emphasized the team’s dedication:
“Our team is ready to gain more experience on the international stage. Some of our young athletes competed in New Zealand last year, and this will be their first Mini Games.”
Aiming for International Success
Vanuatu Archery’s 2025 vision includes competing at the World Field Archery Championships in Italy and aiming for a medal at the Pacific Mini Games.
With growing support from local businesses, improved facilities, and committed athletes, the future of archery in Vanuatu looks brighter than ever.
