Tanna Ferry has been placed under a detention order after suffering engine problems upon arrival at Litzlitz Wharf in Malekula on Tuesday.
The Commissioner of Maritime Safety, Less John Napauti, confirmed the situation to VBTC News.
“Our officers instructed the captain not to move the vessel,” Napauti said. “But he disobeyed and sailed the ship out of Litzlitz Wharf toward Santo, directly violating my order.”
Once the ferry arrived in Santo, the captain was arrested and taken to Number 6 Prison. He has since been released on bail and is scheduled to appear before the Magistrate’s Court in Santo on July 2, 2025, in the morning.
Commissioner Napauti issued a clear warning:
“I’m appealing to all ship owners, captains, and crew — if my office gives an order, you must respect it. If you disagree, come and discuss it with us. But do not break the order, because you will face legal consequences under the VMSA Act that we are implementing.”
