Successful AFL Carnival Week Kicks Off with Girls’ Competition

The AFL high school carnival competition for girls kicked off in full swing on Wednesday this week, involving five schools participating under the AFL Vanuatu program.

The AFL Carnival is one of the most popular programs focused heavily on developing the sport within schools, including schools across the provinces.

The high school carnival program began this week, starting with the girls’ competition. The boys’ competition is scheduled to begin tomorrow.

This type of carnival program also serves as a key opportunity for AFL Vanuatu to scout and recruit potential players into its Academy, which is based at Kawenu Field.

One of the highlights yesterday morning was witnessing female players from rural schools on North Efate arrive at the “home of footy” in Kawenu. These girls had the opportunity to train and play alongside female students from other schools.

The carnival competition will run through to October, when the finals will be held to determine the top two champions — one from the boys’ division and one from the girls’.

Alongside the high school carnival program, AFL Vanuatu continues to run its other development programs, starting from children as young as eight years old.
