Shefa Netball Association Opens 2024 Championship Season Despite Challenges

The Shefa Netball Association (SHEFNA) officially kicked off its opening championship on Tuesday this week, after a two-week delay due to bad weather and late registrations.

The tournament began with two matches: AGM Teams 1 and 2 faced Icount Teams 1 and 2. AGM came out strong, defeating Icount 1 with a final score of 22–14, while Icount 2 led the first quarter of their match 2–0.

VBTC Sports was on the ground at the Stade netball court to cover the action as the competition resumed after a four-month break.

SHEFNA President Mercy Takal confirmed that the tournament will run through June for the first round, followed by a second round. She also announced upcoming events including a possible internet tournament during Independence in July, as well as two mixed tournaments: an open category and a business house competition.

Takal also highlighted ongoing challenges faced by the association, particularly with damaged facilities caused by the recent earthquake.

“The Korman venue is not safe for use, so we’ve had to make new arrangements and return to the Stade court,” she said.

The championship will continue next Tuesday.
