Luganville New Audit Office to Strengthen Accountability

In line with the Decentralization Act and the government’s commitment to bringing services closer to the people, the Vanuatu National Audit Office (VNAO) has officially opened its first regional office in Luganville.

The soft opening marks a milestone in the 2022–2026 corporate plan, which prioritizes establishing a northern office to enhance accessibility and efficiency in auditing services.

Acting Deputy Auditor General, Elsie Willie, emphasized the importance of the new office in strengthening oversight across the northern provinces.

“We have several provinces that we need to audit regularly, and most of them are in the north. Additionally, there are over 10 statutory bodies and state-owned enterprises based here. This office will help minimize costs and improve our ability to serve these areas,” Willie stated.

After 46 years since the VNAO was established under the Constitution, the office is now extending its reach beyond Port Vila.

“Some of our major clients in the north include government departments, five local authorities, and over 10 statutory and state-owned enterprises. Today’s opening marks a new chapter in strengthening accountability and ensuring proper checks and balances on public funds,” Willie added.

The Luganville branch, located near the Fire Station area, will be staffed by five auditors tasked with overseeing financial reviews across the northern provinces.
