Alvea, Living with Disability, Starts Business to Support His Family Amid Parents’ Sacrifice

Anyone living with a disability can start a business if they are determined and remain integrated within their community, says Mr. Alon Alvea, owner of Auto Machinery Repair in Luganville.

Alvea, who has been living with a disability from an accident in 2015, decided to start his own business to support his family. In 2018, he established Auto Machinery Repair in his yard, offering mechanical services for small machinery, including outboard motors, grass cutters, generators, and quad bikes.

Alvea’s parents are farmers living on Malo, while he and his family reside in Luganville. “I watched my parents travel back and forth to Malo, bringing food and making copra to sell for small income to pay for my household bills. While recovering in bed, I realized that if they could no longer provide for us, it would create a big challenge for my family. That was when I decided that I must do something to help,” he said.

As a wheelchair user, Alvea has continued expanding his services to include drag maintenance. Last year, through a scholarship provided by the Australia Pacific Training Program (APTC), he traveled to Fiji to study vehicle management systems.

“Initially, I thought I would study small machinery repairs, but during orientation, I was introduced to car management systems. That motivated me to come back and work on trucks,” he said.

Last week, the country manager of APTC visited Alvea and donated an X-Tool scanner to assist him with vehicle maintenance.

Alvea encourages aspiring entrepreneurs, especially those living with disabilities, to pursue their goals despite challenges.

“If you want to start a business, go ahead. Challenges will come, but do not let negativity stop you. Stay positive and push forward with your plans.”

Auto Machinery Repair has built a strong customer base due to the quality of Alvea’s work, proving that perseverance can turn dreams into reality.
