AFL Vanuatu is set to host its inaugural 9-a-side tournament next week, featuring over 30 players from Australia alongside 31 local participants, including those undergoing umpiring training.
The two-week program, which began this week, includes training sessions for AFL umpires, followed by the AFL Masters 9s competition next week. The initiative aims to develop local coaching, umpiring, and player skills through structured workshops similar to those held in other countries with AFL development programs.
Australian coach Rod Macpherson is leading the training, which runs daily from morning to afternoon at the AFL Vanuatu Academy in Kawenu. The program provides upcoming umpires and players with essential knowledge about their roles, helping to strengthen the sport’s foundation in Vanuatu.
In addition to competing, the visiting Australian participants will explore local attractions such as Port Vila’s Blue Lagoon and stay in local hotels, reinforcing AFL’s role in promoting sports tourism in the country.
The 9s tournament will feature four AFL Vanuatu teams, marking a significant milestone in the organization’s efforts to expand the sport and develop local talent.
