Vanuatu’s Para Tennis team has recorded 13 wins and two losses from 15 matches at a regional competition in Bourail, New Caledonia.

The competition marks the first time the Vanuatu Tennis Federation’s Para Tennis team has competed at a regional level alongside other countries from Oceania.

Speaking to VBTC Sports News, coach Naomi Sipiti said the three-athlete team had performed well throughout the competition.

Strong results in singles matches

Ms Sipiti said the tournament began on Sunday afternoon, when the team won both of its opening matches.

On Monday, the athletes played three matches, winning two and losing one.

The team continued its performance on Tuesday, winning all three of its matches in the morning before recording one win and one loss in the afternoon.

On Wednesday morning, the team played four more matches, winning three and losing one to complete the singles competition.

Overall, the team recorded 13 wins and two losses from its 15 matches.

First experience coaching Para Tennis team

Ms Sipiti said this was her first time travelling with a national Para Tennis team, although she had been working with the athletes in Port Vila.

She said the experience had allowed her to see their performances at an international competition and described the results as encouraging.

The Vanuatu team comprises three para-athletes who represented the country in the regional competition.

Doubles activities to follow

With the singles competition completed, the athletes are expected to take part in doubles activities on Friday.

Ms Sipiti said the doubles activities would mainly provide an opportunity for athletes to have fun and socialise.

The Vanuatu tennis and Para Tennis teams are expected to return to the country next Monday.
